End-of-Lease Options: Renew, Extend, Buy, or Return - What’s Best for You?
Your guide to choosing the best option when your car lease is coming to an end
Your lease is coming to an end, and you’ve got a few choices ahead - renew, extend, buy, or simply hand the car back.
It might sound like a lot to think about, but don’t worry - we’ll break down what each option actually means, along with the pros and cons of each, so you can decide what works best for you.
And if you’re planning to renew, there’s one golden rule: the 6-month mark is the best time to act.
Option 1: Renew for a New Car
The most popular choice by far - and for good reason. Renewing your lease means starting a brand-new agreement on a brand-new car. You’ll hand your current car back and drive away in something shiny, up-to-date, and covered by a fresh warranty.
Why people renew
You get a new car, with the latest safety features and tech.
You’re back under a full manufacturer warranty.
You can often find better efficiency, meaning lower running costs.
You can fix your price early, which often works out cheaper since prices tend to rise each year.
The process is super easy - we already have your details, so everything’s quicker the second time around.
Things to consider
You’ll start a new contract, so if you’re not sure about your future plans, this means a new commitment.
Factory orders can take time, so you’ll want to start around the 6-month mark before your current lease ends. That’s the optimal renewal window, giving you the best range of cars, the best prices, and the smoothest handover.
Option 2: Extend Your Current Lease
If you’re not quite ready to commit to a new car - or just want to buy yourself a little more time - you might be able to extend your current lease.
Most funders allow you to extend for 6 or 12 months, and in some cases, you can even do it informally, meaning you simply keep the car on a monthly rolling basis, usually at the same price.
Why people extend
Flexibility: Ideal if you’re not sure what car you want next.
Simplicity: You keep the same car, same payments, same direct debit.
Short-term option: Great if you’re waiting for a new car to arrive or want to see what’s coming next year.
Sometimes, extending can work out slightly cheaper in the short run.
Things to consider
Once your manufacturer warranty ends, you’ll be responsible for any repairs.
You’ll miss out on new tech and improved efficiency, which could mean higher running costs.
Not all funders allow extensions, although this is rare.
If prices rise during your extension, your next deal could cost more later.
💡 Renewing vs Extending:
If you know you’ll want another lease car soon, it usually makes sense to renew early - especially around the 6-month mark.
But if you’re genuinely unsure or your plans might change, an extension gives you breathing space without pressure.
Option 3: Request to Buy Your Lease Car
Love your current car too much to let it go? In most cases, you can request to buy it from the lease company near the end of your term. If they agree, they’ll give you a purchase price. We can even help arrange finance if you’d like to spread the cost.
When buying makes sense
You’ve done low mileage and kept the car in great condition.
You’ve gone way over your mileage limit, and buying avoids excess mileage fees.
You’ve added personal touches or simply can’t part with it.
The market value is higher than the price the lease company is asking.
The car’s been used for work and seen some wear - buying can save hassle over fair-wear-and-tear inspections.
Things to consider
You’ll be taking on an older car, so no new warranty (unless you add one yourself).
Buying might cost more than renewing into a new lease, especially when factoring in maintenance and depreciation.
Once it’s yours, all future running costs are too.
Option 4: Hand It Back and Walk Away
Finally, you can simply return the car and call it a day.
There’s no obligation to take another one if you don’t want to - that’s one of the best things about leasing.
Why people return
You no longer need a car.
Your circumstances have changed.
You’re waiting before making a decision on your next vehicle.
Things to consider
You’ll have an end-of-lease inspection to check for any damage or excess mileage.
You might need to re-arrange transport if you don’t plan to replace the car right away.
For most customers, returning the car is just the natural end of a lease before starting a new one - and we’ll guide you through every step.
The Smart Move: Plan Around the 6-Month Mark
If you think you’ll want to renew, the six-month window before your lease ends is your sweet spot.
Here’s why:
You can factory order exactly what you want, without being limited to in-stock cars.
You can lock in prices before annual increases hit.
You’ll have plenty of time for delivery, meaning no overlap or downtime.
It’s not about rushing - it’s about staying ahead.
And when you’re ready to chat options, we’ll make it easy - no jargon, no push, just honest advice to help you choose what’s right for you.
In Short
Your lease-end doesn’t need to be stressful - it’s simply your chance to decide what’s next. Whether you renew, extend, buy, or hand back, you’ll always have clear options and our support along the way.
And when you see that first email about renewal? That’s just your friendly reminder that six months out is the perfect time to start planning.
