Porsche 911 GT3 Review: The Ultimate Driver’s Car
A raw, naturally aspirated 9,000rpm Porsche experience that defines driving passion.
Porsche 911 GT3 Review: The Ultimate Driver’s Car
If the 911 Carrera is the car for me, then the 911 GT3 is the one I dream about when I want to go even further. It’s Porsche’s wildest, purest, most track-focused 911 – a car that doesn’t compromise for everyday usability, but instead pours every ounce of engineering into driving engagement.

Living With the Dream
I didn’t live with a GT3 in the same way I did with the Carrera, but every time I’ve driven one, it has felt special. The noise of that naturally aspirated 4.0-litre flat-six, screaming up to 9,000rpm, is spine-tingling, no turbochargers, no hybrid systems – just pure mechanical magic. And unlike turbocharged engines, this one builds and builds in a way that makes you chase the redline every single time.
The 911 GT3 isn’t the kind of car you buy because you “need” a sports car. It’s the one you buy because you live for driving. Honestly, if I had one sat in my garage, I’d be going to bed early just to wake up and take it out on empty roads at dawn – just like I did with the Carrera, but with the volume turned up to eleven.
The Engine: A Dying Breed
The GT3’s 4.0-litre naturally aspirated flat-six makes 510PS, the same as before, but Porsche has refined it with sharper cams, improved oil cooling, and better-flowing throttle valves. On paper, 0–62mph takes 3.9 seconds in the manual or 3.4 in the PDK auto, but the numbers barely scratch the surface.
What matters is the feel. This engine revs like it’s alive, and the noise is intoxicating. Second gear takes you to 80mph, but third is where you’ll live most of the time – and it’s bliss. You can pick between a six-speed manual (raw, involving) or a seven-speed PDK (ruthless and efficient). Either way, it’s Porsche at its purest.

Handling: Hardcore but Precise
The GT3 introduced double-wishbone suspension at the front when it launched, and this updated version tweaks the dampers for even better bump control and stability under braking. It also gets refinements to reduce dive when you stamp on the brakes – useful when you’re approaching a corner at speeds that feel almost illegal.
Make no mistake: the GT3 is firm. On a smooth track, it’s sensational. On a bumpy B-road, it can be a bit much. That’s why Porsche offers the Touring Package, which tones down the styling (no giant wing) and makes it slightly more road-friendly while keeping the raw GT3 experience.
But whichever version you choose, the GT3 remains one of the most precise, confidence-inspiring cars I’ve ever driven. It’s alive in your hands, sharp in every response, and utterly addictive.
Looks and Presence
You’d need to be a Porsche nerd to spot the changes on this updated GT3. The front diffuser and intakes are reworked, the rear diffuser is reshaped, and the wing side plates are new. Lightweight aluminium wheels shave off a bit of mass, and if you want to go extreme, Porsche will sell you magnesium wheels that cut even more.
But the truth is, nobody cares about those details when you drive past. Like the Carrera I ran, the GT3 turns heads everywhere – even more so, thanks to its stance, noise, and aura. It’s a statement car without even trying to be.
Inside the Cockpit
Inside, the GT3 blends new digital tech with its motorsport roots. There’s still a rotary ignition switch instead of a starter button, which I love. The digital dash includes a Track Screen mode, stripping away distractions so you only see oil temps, tyre pressures, and the shift lights flashing at 9,000rpm.
Optional bucket seats hold you tight, and yes, it’s still technically a practical 911 – there’s a 132-litre frunk that’ll take a helmet and a weekend bag. But let’s be honest, this isn’t a car you’re buying for practicality.

Costs: Eye-Watering but Worth It*
At around £157,300 before options, the GT3 isn’t cheap – and with Porsche’s options list, you could easily add another £20–30k. Running costs are heavy too: 21.9mpg at best, Group 50 insurance, and tyres that melt after a spirited track day.
But this is not a car to measure with spreadsheets. You don’t buy a GT3 because it makes sense. You buy it because it makes you feel alive.

My Take – The Purist’s Porsche
For me, the 911 GT3 is Porsche distilled into its purest form. It’s not the most comfortable, not the most practical, and definitely not the cheapest. But it’s the most soul-stirring. If the Carrera is the perfect everyday Porsche, then the GT3 is the one you keep for those mornings when you just want to lose yourself in the drive.
It’s a car I’d choose over almost any other, simply because of the way it makes you feel behind the wheel. Porsche calls it a track weapon – but for me, it’s more than that. It’s a reminder of why we fall in love with driving in the first place.
