Porsche 911 Carrera Review: The Car I’d Choose Over Any Other

I was lucky enough to run a 2021 Porsche 911 Carrera for about six months, during which I put over 10,000 miles on it. That’s enough time to get under the skin of Porsche’s icon properly – and honestly, I can say it’s the car. If I could choose one car to own forever, it would be the 911.

Living With a 911

Let’s get one thing out of the way: the rear seats are borderline pointless unless you’re carrying around amputees. They’ll hold shopping bags, jackets, or very small children, but adults? Forget it. Still, they’re there when you need them – and that’s more than you can say for most sports cars.

On the flip side, the practicality surprised me. I actually managed to get my golf clubs in the back multiple times, though it wasn’t elegant. I had to lay down a thick dust sheet to protect the cream leather, and yes, I scuffed the ceiling a few times in the process. I’m sure there are neater storage solutions for golfers, but the point is: it can be done.

Every time I drove it, the 911 turned heads – even though mine was just the entry model. People notice it. It carries a presence that few cars can match, and you don’t need to tick every box on the options list to feel special driving one.

Performance and Power

The updated Carrera is no slouch. Its 3.0-litre twin-turbo flat-six now produces 394PS (up from 385PS), borrowing turbos from the GTS and a charge cooler from the Turbo. That’s enough for 0–62mph in 4.1 seconds and a top speed of 183mph.

Some purists mourn the lack of a manual gearbox, but the eight-speed PDK auto is near-perfect – razor sharp when you’re pushing hard, smooth when you’re just cruising. The engine still delivers that signature boxer howl, and it’s flexible enough to be lazy in traffic or ferocious on a Sunday blast.

And trust me, I used to go to bed early just to wake up and drive it at dawn. That’s how addictive this car is.

Handling That Defines the Class

Porsche has made the 911 sharper without spoiling its usability. The latest Carrera gets rear-wheel steering as standard, improving both tight manoeuvres and motorway stability. Bigger brakes also now come standard, and the balance between comfort and precision is spot on.

There are multiple driving modes, including a clever Wet Mode that senses water on the road and adjusts the car’s behaviour. But honestly, even left in Normal, the steering feel and balance are benchmark good. It’s one of those cars you just want to drive and drive.

If you’ve got the extra budget, I’d say go for the Carrera 4S. But if not? Don’t worry. The standard Carrera was more than enough for me – and I never felt short-changed.

Styling and Interior

The 911 hasn’t changed drastically – and that’s a good thing. Subtle tweaks like redesigned LED matrix headlights and a new rear light strip give it a fresher look, but it’s still unmistakably a 911.

Inside, Porsche has gone more digital. The 12.6-inch curved driver display offers multiple layouts, but the rev counter remains front and centre – as it should. The infotainment system has also been upgraded, offering more connectivity and even streaming features. Yet it still feels driver-focused and beautifully put together.

Practical touches include a 132-litre frunk (front boot), which is ideal for weekend bags, and of course, those tiny rear seats when you need them.

Costs and Everyday Use

At around £100,000 for the Coupe and £110,000 for the Cabriolet, the 911 Carrera is hardly cheap, but standard equipment is stronger than ever – including rear-wheel steering, PASM adaptive suspension, and those advanced LED headlights.

Running costs are reasonable (for what it is): 28mpg combined and 230g/km CO2. Service intervals are every two years or 20,000 miles, and Porsche’s fixed-price servicing takes away some of the guesswork. Residual values are strong, too – meaning the 911 holds its worth better than most rivals.

My Take – The Car

The Porsche 911 Carrera isn’t just a car. It’s the car. It manages to be thrilling, usable, beautiful, and iconic all at once. Yes, the back seats are almost pointless, and yes, I scuffed the ceiling trying to fit golf clubs. But I’d have another one tomorrow without hesitation.

It’s rare that a car lives up to its legend – but the 911 absolutely does. Whether you’re in the entry Carrera or a top-end Turbo, the magic is there. And if you’re anything like me, you’ll find yourself planning your days around when you can drive it next.
